Overview
Treatment has three parts: medications for symptoms, disease-modifying therapy for selected patients with early Alzheimer's disease, and management of everything that makes thinking worse.
What treatment can do
- Support memory and attention modestly with symptomatic medication
- Slow decline in some people with early Alzheimer's disease
- Treat depression, sleep apnea, pain, and other contributors
- Reduce behavioral symptoms through environment and routine
- Improve safety and preserve independence longer
What treatment cannot do
- Restore lost abilities
- Stop progression completely
- Replace caregiver support and planning
